Future Phones

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

In my last post I covered a few of the popular phones from times gone by so for this post let’s take a look at some of the possible technologies and phones of the future

Here is a short video from Nokia exploring some cool concepts for phones of the future. Looks absolutely amazing with things like object recognition (could be done via location identification and access to maps that have that fellow users have tagged points of interest via their phone with gps) and also shows off some cool interfaces with touch recognition and drag and drop.

Now you might be thinking, those phones are cool but touch screens…my phone screen is scratched to death now! Well threre thinking of that too! Nokia has patented technology that coats phones with a diamond tough substance which provides a very durable phone surface and also repels dust and dirt!

Other touted future technolgies include holographic projection – yep, just like Luke Skywalker you’ll be able to recieve messages via holographic projection! HoloTouch is one such company working on this technology, with a holographic interface for a car phone pictured below.

And while your’e waiting for fuel cell power for your car the mobile phone might beat it too it! Nokia has a concept phone called the Aeon which heads down the road of wearable technology, runs on a fuel cell and also has the possibility of monitoring health signals and transmitting reports via local network to monitoring stations.

As if fuel cell technology wasn’t enough how about solar and kinetic energy! Mode Labs has three concept phones that make use of solar and kinetic energy via photovoltaic cells and movement that is transformed into energy which allows the mobile to continuously recharge itself. The phone pictured below is the ‘yo-yo’ which can be worn around the neck and recharges via solar and a pendulum located in the rear of the phone.
