Saturday, April 28th, 2007

The convergence of mobile phones and the internet is starting to become hot property with many developers launching applications that allow users to connect, socialize and tools make life easier.

Let’s take a look at some of those application in particular the ones converging SMS and the web.

Twitter is one such service that’s taking the web by storm at the moment. Twitter is like a social networking site in a micro blogging format. Users can send updates on their activities to the Twitter site via SMS (and other means). Messages or posts are contained to the standard text message length of 140 characters so it’s like sending a quick notation to a message board.

Users create a profile and can choose as to whether their messages can be read by everyone or just their select group. Members of that group can also receive updates via the twitter site, via an RSS feed or sent to them via SMS. Visit Twitter.com to see it in action.

Remember the Milk is another service gaining momentum that enables users to set up reminders. Think of Remember the Milk as a To-Do-List on steroids. You can receive reminders in multiple ways including via popular instant message services, email and SMS. There are multiple ways to set up reminders, organise your lists and the ability to share with your contacts or the world. Handy for forgetful colleagues or partners! Tasks can be added via email and phone and even added to a map. Visit: RememberTheMilk.com
